Information Highway Advisory Council

The federal vernment`s Information Highway Advisory Council, announced in the previous ACT Newsletter, is now quite active. The council has formed five working groups:

In addition to the 29 people originally appointed to the council a further 26 people have been appointed to the various working committees. The committees meet on a regular basis and the entire council meets monthly.

The council is currently wrestling with a number of issues and is considering how best to get more public input and feedback.

At the most recent council meeting the Research and Development group formally recommended $80 million in new funding for CANARIE, the Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research, Industry and Education.

The money, to be spread over three years, would allow the consortium of industry, government and research community members to continue developing and testing a national high-speed communications network.
