In late August the final link of a high-speed, fibre-optic cable between North America and Europe was connected. The 7,500 kilometre cable has more capacity than all existing cables across the Atlantic. The idea for the Atlantic cable was conceived by Montreal-based Teleglobe, the Canadian company that handles all Canadian overseas calls. The $600 million cable, called CANTAT-3, can transport state-of-the art telecommunications such as video conferencing and multimedia. CANTAT-3 is a partnership of 28 companies including Teleglobe and major European telecommunication providers.
