CANARIE announces CA*net 3

Earlier this year CANARIE announced that it would be developing CA*net 3. This unique high performance network is the world's first national optical Internet - a next-generation Internet backbone for research and development that industry experts predict will revolutionize telecommunications technology and help Canada retain its leadership position in this highly competitive industry.

Built from the ground up, this fibre optic based network will deliver up to 40-gigabit capability, faster than any other existing commercial Internet in the world. The CA*net 3's vastly increased bandwidth, coupled with the on-going research program, could possibly identify new technologies for Internet service providers that, in turn, could reduce the cost of basic Internet delivery. This network will allow CANARIE's partners and other Canadian high tech industries to explore, for example, next-generation multimedia video conferencing and enhanced virtual reality.
