Millenium Pilot Project Underway
The Millenium project is an Rnet funded project designed to expand the BC Virtual Museum to include materials from a number of British Columbia galleries and museums. The specific objectives for the project are to increase the content of the BC Virtual Museum, to complete high-speed networking links between the participants, and to provide high-bandwidth remote community access.
The project started with a solicitation for participation, which was sent to approximately 45 galleries and institutions throughout the province. For those who expressed interest, follow up discussions were held via telephone. As a result of these discussions a number of institutions were chosen to participate in the project.
In the second phase of the project, now underway, participants are beginning the process of creating digital images from their collections. Depending on the nature of the nature of their materials, this may involve scanning of existing photographs and slides, or possibly using digital cameras to create new images. It is expected that the digital materials produced will be made into CD-Roms and will form part of the World Heritage Exchange.
