Rnet has received funding as part of an experimental national-regional high-speed network created to encourage technology companies, universities, hospitals, and government research facilities to jointly develop new services for the information highway.
John Manley, Federal Minister of Industry, announced the creation of the CANARIE experimental test-bed network during a visit to Vancouver April 30, 1994. CANARIE (Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research, Industry, and Education) is a non-profit corporation with 100 private and public members that is promoting the development of a Canadian information highway.
CANARIE is contributing $2.5 million to the first phase of the network initiative, including $250,000 for the BC network Rnet. Rnet president Brent Sauder said that Canadian research and industrial sectors will use the facility to collaborate on related activities that are under way in different parts of the country.
ACT is a participant in Rnet BC.
