On December 15 RNet had its official opening at Science World. The opening was attended by Federal Secretary of State Jon Gerrard, MLA David Schreck, and CANARIE president Andrew Bjerring as well as Brent Sauder, RNet president, and other members of RNet. RNet is a high-speed testbed network that can carry voice, data, and video at 145 million bits of information per second. It is a fibre-optic network based on ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technology developed by MPR Teltech and Newbridge Networks. The network links Saint Paul's, Children's, and Vancouver Hospitals with the UBC and SFU campuses as well as ACT, BC Tel, and MPR. The opening included demonstrations of some of the applications of the network, including a demonstration by ACT of its Museum System.
At the opening it was announced that RNet has received $1.3 million in funding from the provincial government. In addition ACT's participation in the network has been extended to March 1996.
