As an extension of the Virtual Museum project, the Virtual Museum Association of B.C. is being incorporated, which includes the participants mentioned above as well as the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Other institutions in the province have indicated an interest in participating, including the Cultural Centre in Alert Bay. Centres in remote locations such as Alert Bay would be linked by direct to computer satellite communications currently under development.
The association proposes to establish a learning centre at the Vancouver Museum that would be a pilot project for the Provincial Learning Network (described elsewhere in this newsletter). The centre would include a dozen workstations and would be linked directly to the Internet and also to Rnet, B.C. high speed test network.
This project constitutes pilot deployment of the ACT Distributed Museum Archiving System, leading to full marketing in 1996.
